My aim was to further my skills in enamelling and learn new techniques. I spent 2 full days with enamelling teacher Sheila Macdonald in her Edinburgh workshop.

The first session was in January 2023 when I learnt more about creating enamelled pictorial images using fine silver wires. See photos of results from workshop. During spring/summer of 2023 I spent time building up a small collection that I exhibited at Highland Park in August 2023. Throughout the project my theme has been Oystercatchers mainly I find these birds so representative of Orkney and really inspiring.

My second session was in October 2023 and this time it was spent learning how to use paint enamels. A whole new world of possibilities opened itself that day and I will be working on new pieces for next summer. I also used some of my award on purchasing enamels and some tools.

Spending time getting mentored by Sheila has been invaluable. So much inspiration, knowledge gaining and help. Sheila is supporting me with lots of questions and help apart from the paid sessions.

I can now build on my skills further using the foundation of skills I have got from spending time with my mentor. Before the award I couldn’t produce the designs I can now. As well as gaining confidence which is also invaluable in any creative practice.

I am now also able to teach others what I have learnt and I will be doing a series of workshops at Papdale Halls starting end of February and in Eday starting late spring.
