Hazardous and icy road conditions set to continue tomorrow 7 April
06 April 2021

Orkney Islands Council is warning of continued hazardous road conditions overnight tonight (6 April) and into tomorrow, 7 April, including ice.

A new weather warning for snow and wind has been issued by the Met Office for the north of Scotland, valid from 19:00 to 10:00 on Wednesday.

The Council's Roads team is advising that road surface temperatures are expected to drop below zero again overnight. Therefore drivers should anticipate hazardous driving conditions to continue well into tomorrow.

Drivers are urged to take great care into tomorrow, as there remains the risk of black ice and icy patches - potentially obscured by fresh falls of snow - and drifting snow, as well as very poor visibility in the wind-blown snow showers.

While it's expected snow flurries may ease for a time at about 16:00 this afternoon, they’re likely to restart about from 21:00 tonight and add up to 3cm of snow.

Drivers are reminded to allow plenty of time for journeys and to be mindful that gritters only run until 18:00, starting again at 06:00.
