A feast for St Patrick’s Day on the menu in Orkney’s schools!
12 March 2021

There will be a feast fit for Saint Patrick himself on the menu throughout schools in Orkney on Wednesday 17 March – St Patrick’s Day.

In recognition of Ireland’s primary patron saint and the Emerald Isle, the courses on offer will not only be reflecting some of the country’s food heritage but also turning green wherever possible!

The choices include boiled bacon in a rich gravy, homemade leek and potato pie, mashed tatties, boiled cabbage and peas and homemade soda bread. For pudding, pupils can enjoy chocolate slice with mint icing and chocolate.

Orkney Islands Council’s School Catering Manager, Scott Pring, said with all primary and some more secondary pupils back in school from 15 March, it was felt appropriate to serve up a special menu – not just in celebration of St Patrick’s Day, but also as a welcome back!

“After the success of our St Andrew’s day menu back in November we are planning a few more themed menus throughout the rest of the year. This is a treat for the children and young people and allows our staff to get even more creative than usual!”
