Tomb of the Eagles survey reminder

Date: 09 June 2023

Community urged to take part in Tomb of the Eagles survey

Orkney Islands Council is urging folk with an interest in Tomb of the Eagles to take part in an online survey about what the archaeological site means to them, including their aspirations for the site.

The survey is being run by Shirley Collier Consulting, who have been appointed by Orkney Islands Council (OIC) to carry out an independent appraisal of the options for Tomb of the Eagles – also known as Isbister Chambered Cairn.

The survey can be accessed here.

The Tomb of the Eagles is an archaeological site on South Ronaldsay, consisting of a Neolithic chambered cairn (the tomb) as well as a Bronze Age burnt mound and a visitor centre. It was run privately, until 2020, as a visitor attraction, but unfortunately closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this year, artefacts were transferred to the care of the Council’s Museums team and some are now on display in The Orkney Museum.

The Council is now seeking to understand the significance of the Tomb of the Eagles from a number of different perspectives, especially what it means to people who live in South Ronaldsay or may have lived there in the past.

The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete. The results of the survey and wider study will be submitted to OIC in coming months.

The questionnaire is anonymous but offers an option for people to provide a contact email or phone number if they are happy to be contacted by the researchers for more detail.

The survey closes Friday 9 June 2023, at midnight.

Paper copies can be picked up from the Trading Post in St Margarets Hope.

Tourism businesses and tour guides are receiving links to tailored surveys through Visit Scotland and other industry membership groups.
