Orkney Islands Council's newly redeveloped Scapa Flow Museum has appeared on the small screen when an episode of the current series of ‘Who Do You Think You Are’, featuring Ralf Little, aired last night (Thursday 30 June) on BBC1.

Engagement and Exhibitions Officer with the Council's Museums team, Tom Muir, helped the production team in lead up to filming and while in the county:

“The Orkney Museum helps with the production of many TV shows by supplying information and with staff appearing on camera as local experts.

“Over the last few months I have worked with several production teams, including Wall to Wall who brought Ralf Little to Orkney to film for the 2022 'Who Do You Think You Are' series.

“Of all the celebrities that I have worked with over the years, Ralf was one of the nicest. Despite success at the age of 17 with 'The Royle Family' he remains a down-to-earth, genuine guy. If you want to know his family connection with Orkney, you will have to watch the show!”

Tom accompanied Ralf out to Lyness, Hoy where one of Ralf's relatives spent time in World War II - a posting which took them right into the thick of battle in the Pacific.

Ralf’s story was broadcast on 30 June, on BBC One, at 9pm.

You can watch again on BBC iPlayer.

Scapa Flow Museum is run by Orkney Islands Council and charts Orkney’s military involvement in the First and Second World Wars. Named after the vast natural harbour it overlooks, the Museum provides a safe home for a major collection of wartime artefacts, many of national and international importance.

Its recent refurbishment project valued at of £4.4 million, comprising an extension to the Museum and refurbishment of the historic pumphouse, has been supported by Orkney Islands Council, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic Environment Scotland, the Orkney LEADER 2014-2020 programme, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Museums Galleries Scotland and the Scottish Government’s European Regional Development Fund programme, managed by NatureScot through the Natural & Cultural Heritage Fund. (The Natural & Cultural Heritage Fund is part of the Scottish Government’s European Regional Development Fund programme, which finishes in 2023. NatureScot is also managing another element of the programme – the Green Infrastructure Fund. The Scottish Government is the Managing Authority for the European Regional Development Fund and the European Structural Funds 2014-20 Programme.
