Reviews of services

Once services are put in place, we check regularly that they are working well and still meeting your needs. This is called a review. Your needs may change over time - you might need more help, or you may be able to manage with less. Reviews make sure your services keep up with your circumstances.

By law, we must review all services we provide or fund at least once a year. Most people receiving services will have two reviews each year - an annual review and a six-monthly review within their service.

About the review

When you first start a service

When you first receive a new service, it will be reviewed between four and six weeks after it starts. This is to make sure it is working properly and to make any adjustments needed. Your social worker or occupational therapist will carry out this review with you, and will include your service provider and anyone else who can contribute, such as your community nurse.

Annual reviews

Annual reviews are usually managed by social workers or occupational therapists from the Adult Services, Community Mental Health or All Age Disability teams. Anyone who provides a service will be asked to attend, and you can ask family members or carers to support you or contribute information.

Six-monthly reviews

Six-monthly reviews within services such as home care are managed by your key worker and a senior from the service.

Having your say

The worker calling the review will want to see you on your own at some point to make sure you have a chance to say what you think about your services. If you would like someone with you, or support from Orkney Advocacy, this can be arranged. Family members or supporters who cannot attend in person can contribute by phone, letter or video call.

After the review

After the meeting, the worker will put all comments and decisions in writing. Their manager will check and sign the report and recommend what happens next.

If everything is going well and no changes are needed, your case will be closed to the worker until your next annual review or until your circumstances change. If things are likely to change soon, or there are difficulties with your services, your case will remain open and the worker will continue to work with you.

You will receive a copy of the review to read, check and sign. Everyone who contributed to the review will also receive a copy.

What else might happen

The review may decide that a new assessment is needed because your circumstances have changed significantly. If you have informal carers, they may also be offered a Carer's Assessment with Orkney Health and Care or Crossroads.
