Campsites and hostels

We operate two campsites and three hostels across Orkney, offering comfortable, great value accommodation for singles, families and groups.

Birsay Hostel and Campsite

Set in the rural northwest corner of Mainland Orkney, close to the village of Birsay. Nearby are spectacular coastline and quiet beaches, several of Orkney's neolithic sites, the cliffs of Marwick Head, RSPB reserves, Earl's Palace, Barony Mill, Kirbuster Farm Museum, and the tidal Island of the Brough of Birsay.

The 3 star campsite offers 28 pitches and 13 electric hook-up pitches, suitable for tents, caravans and motorhomes, with toilet and shower blocks, washing facilities and a drying green.

The hostel offers 3 star accommodation across 5 bedrooms, sleeping 26 people. All bed linen is provided, with a well equipped kitchen, dining area, washing facilities and drying green.

Opening times

The hostel is normally open April to September. Out-of-season booking may be available by arrangement for large bookings.

The Hoy Centre

Open year round, the Hoy Centre offers 4 star hostel accommodation at the north end of Hoy, within walking distance of the Moaness foot passenger ferry and the popular walking route to Rackwick.

The centre is fully accessible, with ample free parking, en-suite rooms, a multi-use hall seating up to 60 people, a well equipped kitchen, and a common room with TV and Wi-Fi.

The hostel is used as a base for outdoor education, so weekdays during the April to June and August to October school terms may not be available.

Open all year round, except Christmas and New Year.

Check-in: 17:00, contact the Warden to confirm your arrival time before travelling to Hoy Departure: 10:00

Point of Ness Campsite, Stromness

On the scenic shoreline overlooking Stromness, with views of the Hoy hills, just a few minutes' walk from the town centre and ferry terminal.

The 3 star campsite is suitable for touring caravans, motorhomes and tents, with a mix of hard-standing and grass pitches, electric hook-up, and toilet and shower facilities upgraded in 2022.

Open from the beginning of April to October.

Check-in: from 14:00 Departure: 10:00

Warden on duty:

• 10:00 to 12:00 (cleaning of amenity block)
• 14:30 to 15:30
• 20:00 to 21:30

Facilities

• Coin-operated washing machine and tumble dryer (£5.00 per wash, £2.00 per drying cycle, using £1 coins)
• Chemical waste disposal and water available on site

Rackwick Hostel

A remote and peaceful stay in the scenic Rackwick Valley in northwest Hoy, much of which is owned by the RSPB. Close to Rackwick Bay, a sand and boulder beach surrounded by 200m cliffs, and the starting point for the walking route to the Old Man of Hoy. Popular with walkers and cyclists.

The hostel offers accommodation for up to 8 people across two rooms, with all bedding provided, a small kitchen and eating area. There's no TV or Wi-Fi.

The hostel is used as a base for outdoor education, so there may be limited availability during the April to June and August to October school terms.
