I was born in Yesnaby, Sandwick, educated at Sandwick South Primary and then Stromness Academy. On leaving school I moved to Deerness to work on the farm of Halley for 20 years, then onto the dairy farm of Braebuster. After that, I went into the building trade, firstly at Alfred Flett in Holm and then onto B&L Builders in Kirkwall.
I served on various committees over the years, mainly the young farmer movement when I was chairman of the Deerness Young Farmers’ Club at the time. I was also chairman of the Orkney District of Young Farmers. I have been show yard director of the East Mainland and County Shows for many years.
My wife, Jan and I married in 1981 and in 1986 bought our own farm, Rosebank in Deerness. We have four grown up children, Craig, Ailsa, and twins Fiona and Helen.
We also have two grandbairns.
