Preparing for emergencies
We work with partner organisations to plan for and respond to emergencies in Orkney. Our role in a major incident is to support the local emergency services and to assist the most vulnerable members of our community.
We have a Major Emergency Plan in place and we work with partner agencies through the Orkney Local Emergency Co-ordinating Group (OLECG). We take part in training exercises and multiagency meetings throughout the year to make sure we are ready to respond.
Orkney is also part of the Highlands and Islands Local Resilience Partnership (HILRP), which coordinates emergency preparedness across the region, and contributes to Scotland-wide resilience planning.
Flotta Oil Terminal is a major hazard site under the COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) Regulations. We work with the terminal operator and other partner agencies on off-site emergency planning arrangements in case of an incident at the terminal.
We also have a Business Continuity Plan in place, which sets out how we will keep delivering essential services if we're affected by an emergency or disruption ourselves.
