We believe young people should have a real say in decisions that affect them. We support a range of ways for young people in Orkney to get involved, have their voices heard and make a difference - locally and nationally.

Orkney Youth Forum

The Orkney Youth Forum brings together young people from across Orkney to discuss issues that matter to them and feed their views into local and national decision-making. Contact us to find out how to get involved.

OIC Youth Chamber Debate

The Youth Chamber Debate is held in the Orkney Islands Council Chamber in Kirkwall, giving young people the opportunity to debate topics they feel passionately about directly with councillors, senior officers and representatives from partner organisations. Topics are chosen through consultation with young people, including through the Orkney Youth Forum and our Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament.

The debate is a well-established part of Orkney's calendar, giving young people the chance not only to be heard but also to better understand the democratic process.

Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs)

The Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) is a democratic, politically independent charity that gives young people across Scotland a national voice. It is designed by young people, led by young people and is for the benefit of young people. Orkney elects two MSYPs every two years.

Being an MSYP is a great opportunity to drive change, develop confidence, learn how to advocate for what you believe in and form incredible friendships. Past MSYPs have helped secure votes for 16-year-olds in Scotland and improve public transport for young people, including the national Under 22s free bus travel.
