Child protection
Child protection means keeping children and young people safe from abuse and neglect, from birth to the age of 18. Every child has the right to be protected, and abuse or neglect can have lasting effects on a child's health, development, education and future.
The right to protection is a founding principle of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is now part of Scots law. In Orkney, we follow the Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) framework and work with partners to make sure children at risk of harm are identified and supported as early as possible.
