What is PREVENT?

PREVENT is part of the UK Government's counter-terrorism strategy. Its aim is to help keep people and communities safe by preventing individuals from being drawn into terrorism or violent extremism. It addresses the threat from international terrorism as well as domestic extremism, including far-right and far-left groups and those connected to Northern Irish-related terrorism.

What does PREVENT do?

PREVENT provides practical support to stop people from being drawn into terrorism. It helps to safeguard and support those most at risk of radicalisation, and enables those who have already been involved to disengage and move on. It works across a wide range of sectors, including education, health, criminal justice, faith groups and community organisations.

Our legal duty

Since 2015, we have had a legal duty to help prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. We take a measured and proportionate approach to this duty, based on the risks that Police Scotland has identified as relevant to Orkney's communities.

We also lead a process called the PREVENT Professional Concerns Process, which is designed to support people who may be at risk of being drawn into terrorism or violent extremism.
