Kirkwall BID announces new interim Chair

Date: 23 May 2023

Cheryl Chapman

Cheryl Chapman, Destination Development Manager for VisitScotland in Orkney, has taken over from Duncan McLean, proprietor of Kirkness & Gorie as Kirkwall BID’s new interim chair.

Duncan is leaving his role with the BID after more than four years to allow another director to head up the board.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time as a Kirkwall BID director, and also as a volunteer on the events group. There were some really challenging times during Covid, but above all I will take away a great sense of cooperation between businesses, and between businesses and the community. It’s this cooperation that makes Kirkwall a vibrant town centre.”

Duncan will continue his involvement in BID, just in a different capacity.

“I remain an ardent supporter of BID and look forward to participating in everything they do – as a shopkeeper rather than an organiser.”

Cheryl, who has been with VisitScotland in Orkney for almost five years and a Kirkwall BID board member for three years, said: “We were delighted with the results of the recent re-ballot that gives Kirkwall BID a mandate for another five years to continue the important work it does in promoting, supporting and enhancing our wonderful high street. Duncan has been a great chair and has lead Kirkwall BID through some very challenging times when it was important our voice was heard.

“I am looking forward to working with the wide range of business to make sure our high street continues to thrive.”

As well as helping Orkney’s development as a sustainable tourism destination in her VisitScotland role, Cheryl sits on a number of boards including the John Rae Society.

Cheryl’s first role as Chair will be hosting the Kirkwall BID AGM on Wednesday 31 May in the Albert Hotel. This event is open to all Kirkwall BID members, starting at 5pm with food and networking, followed by the AGM at 6pm.

“We are using the AGM as a session to garner thoughts on the projects and activities we should focus on delivering this year, so I hope members will attend and have their say,” she said.
