Bus service information

Bus services in Orkney are provided by Stagecoach on the Mainland, with a range of community and demand-responsive services on the outer isles. Timetables can change at short notice, so check before you travel.

Service disruptions

Road works 

Bus services may be affected by road works. Check our regular roads update for the latest information.

Bad weather 

When the Met Office issues a Yellow weather warning, all public bus services will be under review and may be suspended or cancelled at short notice.

When an Amber warning is issued, Orkney Mainland public bus services will be automatically suspended for the duration of the warning. For isles bus services, check directly with the operator.

Isles bus services

Sanday Bus 

The Sanday Bus operates to meet all ferry arrivals and departures at Loth Pier between the first Sunday in May and the last Monday in September. During the winter timetable, the bus runs on demand and will drop you at any roadside location on the island.

All bookings must be made by 6pm the evening before travel, between 9am and 6pm. National Entitlement Cards are accepted. All services are fully wheelchair accessible. Please advise of any accessibility needs when booking.

Westray Bus Service 

The Westray Bus Service operates to meet all ferries at Rapness terminal. A fully scheduled service runs from the first Sunday in May until the last Monday in September. For the rest of the year, the service must be pre-booked with at least 4 hours' notice. Passengers may be picked up or dropped off anywhere on Westray. National Entitlement Cards are accepted.

Hoy and Walls Community Bus 

A regular weekday public bus service meets most ferries from Houton, travelling between Lyness Ferry Terminal and Longhope. A Sunday service also runs, extending to Moaness Ferry (North Hoy). National Entitlement Cards are accepted. Wheelchair accessible with 24 hours' notice.
