Ferry Replacement Programme
We are working to replace our ageing internal ferry fleet, in partnership with the Scottish Government through the Ferries Taskforce.
Why we need new ferries
Most of our internal ferry fleet is over 30 years old. The current vessels face increasing difficulties sourcing replacement parts, rising refit costs, lack of accessibility features and limited capacity.
Phase 1: Outer North Isles vessels
Working with Danish consultancy Knud E Hansen, we have developed designs for three new large monohull ferries (up to 60 metres) to serve Westray, Stronsay, Sanday and Eday, compatible with existing pier infrastructure.
The proposed vessels would offer:
- Seating for 190 passengers (compared to 142 currently)
- Capacity for 34 cars or 10 HGVs (compared to 26 cars or 2 HGVs)
- Lift access and enhanced accessibility throughout
- Modern amenities including changing places facility, recliner lounge and workstations
What happens next?
We are finalising detailed designs and expect to issue tenders for vessel construction in December 2025. However, any contract awards are subject to securing full funding from the Scottish Government. Funding discussions are ongoing through the Ferries Taskforce.
Phase 2: Inner and South Isles
Phase 2 will develop specifications for vessels serving Papa Westray and North Ronaldsay, Graemsay and North Hoy, Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre, Shapinsay, and the South Isles, along with associated harbour infrastructure works. This work is also subject to funding.
