Winter can bring tricky road conditions. With a small workforce and miles of rural roads to cover, we take a prioritised approach to treating our roads for ice and snow. Full details are available on our Winter Service Plan page but here are some of the most commonly received questions.

Which footways are gritted?

Footway treatment will apply to Kirkwall and Stromness only.
Priority 1, 2 and 3 routes will be cleared in frost or snow conditions.
We have a priority system for footway treatment which is illustrated on the footway priority maps on the Councils website.
These include main shopping areas and key routes leading to:
- the town centre
- medical centres
- schools
- public buildings
- transport terminals
Only one side of the road / street will be cleared / treated.
