Winter Service FAQs

GritterWinter can bring tricky road conditions. With a small workforce and miles of rural roads to cover, we take a prioritised approach to treating our roads for ice and snow. Full details are available on our Winter Service Plan page but here are some of the most commonly received questions.

When are Priority 2 routes treated?

(How, when and where we grit roads)

Priority 2 routes will be treated when:

  • Priority 1 routes have been completed
  • time and resources allow
  • when freezing temperatures are forecast to continue

The timing and level of treatment on Priority 2 routes is dependent on the weather conditions at the time.

We may find it difficult to treat secondary routes during severe weather as we need to keep primary routes open and safe to travel on. This involves repeated treatment/clearing on the primary routes.

Priority 2 routes will not generally be treated in the afternoon unless conditions become severe.
