Winter Service FAQs

GritterWinter can bring tricky road conditions. With a small workforce and miles of rural roads to cover, we take a prioritised approach to treating our roads for ice and snow. Full details are available on our Winter Service Plan page but here are some of the most commonly received questions.

Why can’t you grit every road?

(How, when and where we grit roads)

We aim to grit all affected Priority 1 and Priority 2 roads in order of priority and when the weather conditions persist for a period of time. Priority 3 routes will not be gritted. They will receive snow clearing only when higher priority routes have been completed and when conditions are severe and likely to persist for several days.

Our road network is over 900 km long, with Priority 1 and Priority 2 routes covering a significant proportion of the network.
