Winter can bring tricky road conditions. With a small workforce and miles of rural roads to cover, we take a prioritised approach to treating our roads for ice and snow. Full details are available on our Winter Service Plan page but here are some of the most commonly received questions.

How do you decide which roads need to be gritted first?

We are required to prioritise our road and footpath gritting routes.
Following a consultation with emergency services, local communities and Elected Members our Priority 1, Priority 2 and Priority 3 routes were decided.
The review considered:
- how much traffic uses the road
- whether the road is a primary emergency route or leading to a school
- if it is a known trouble spot
- if it is a main road, or provides a link into a neighbouring area
There are currently no plans to undertake a large scale review of our routes.
