Winter Service FAQs

GritterWinter can bring tricky road conditions. With a small workforce and miles of rural roads to cover, we take a prioritised approach to treating our roads for ice and snow. Full details are available on our Winter Service Plan page but here are some of the most commonly received questions.

Why aren’t Priority 3 and other minor roads salted?

Apart from finite resources, there are logistical reasons for not treating minor roads in severe weather. Clearing minor routes before Priority 1 and 2 routes are safe to travel on would invariably lead to more vehicles attempting to use the main priority routes – in severe conditions this presents an added risk of drivers becoming stuck or having an accident, which then makes it harder for our crews to treat priority routes and clear hazards, including as requested by emergency services.
