Stillbirth registration

If you've experienced a stillbirth - where a baby was not born alive after the 24th week of pregnancy - you must register this with us within 21 days.

You can register a stillbirth that happened in Scotland at any registration office in Scotland.

Since 2022, you've been able to register a stillbirth remotely over the phone, although you can still book a face-to-face appointment if you'd prefer.

The hospital will email the relevant paperwork (Form 6) directly to your chosen registration office.

If you're married to each other, either parent can register the stillbirth. If you're not married and want both your names on the registration, you'll both need to attend together.

After registration, you'll receive a free stillbirth certificate from us.

We'll also email the relevant paperwork (Form 8) to your chosen funeral director, so they can go ahead with arrangements for burial or cremation.
