Young Persons’ Free Bus Travel Scheme for Under 22s - update

If you are 5-21 years old and live in Scotland you are eligible for free bus travel from 31 January 2022.

In light of the Covid-19 situation, the Scottish Government is asking that young people aged 5-21 who rely on public bus services for essential travel apply for the free bus scheme at this time.

There is no prescribed list of what constitutes essential travel – it will differ for different children, young people and families. But it might include travel for education, training, work, care or health reasons. It’s recommended that those young people for whom bus travel is essential apply at this stage.

It’s important to note that even if you already have a National Entitlement Card or Young Scot National Entitlement Card, you must apply for a new or replacement card to travel by bus for free. Previously issued cards will not allow you access to the scheme. Parents or guardians must provide approval for children aged between 5-15 to access the free bus travel by applying on their behalf. Young people aged 16-21 should apply themselves.

Children aged under 5 years do not need a card as they already travel for free on commercial bus services across Scotland.
