Orkney Child Protection Committee

In Orkney we have an integrated Adult Support and Protection Committee and Child Protection Committee who share the brand of the Orkney Public Protection Committee.

What are Child Protection Committees?

Child Protection Committee's (CPC's) are a strategic, multi-agency, child protection partnership which bringing together senior representatives from the public, private and third sectors. In Orkney, this includes our education services and children’s services; housing services; legal services; NHS Orkney; Police Scotland; the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration (SCRA); the local voluntary / third sector; and other key local organisations.

Membership of CPC's are wide-ranging to reflect the scope of the local children’s services landscape across public, private and third sectors in Orkney.  Membership is also kept under constant review.

Each Local Authority in Scotland has a Child Protection Committee for their area.

In February 2019, The Scottish Government published Protecting Children and Young People: Child Protection Committee and Chief Officer Responsibilities Guidance (Scottish Government: February 2019)  which describes the functions of Child Protection Committees as:

  • continuous improvement
  • public information, engagement and participation
  • strategic planning and connections
  • annual reporting on the work of the CPC

The Orkney Public Protection Committee (OPPC) is the primary strategic planning forum for inter-agency child protection work in Orkney. We aim to raise awareness, amongst staff in all agencies dealing with children to the possibility of abuse and neglect. OPPC promotes the highest standards of inter-agency practice to protect vulnerable children and has a key role in evaluating how well local services work together to protect vulnerable children. The OPPC is responsible for raising awareness within the local community of the need to safeguard vulnerable children including knowing how to report concerns.
