World War 1 Commemorations

The 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War is commemorated in 2014.

A local programme of events linked to the Great War will take place during the next five years.

These will mark Orkney’s involvement in the conflict, from Britain’s declaration of war in August 2014, to the scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet in Scapa Flow in 1919.
