Movement and Reflection - Land and Sea

Date: 10th April 2026

Time: 13:00 to 13:00

VACMA Wendy Barker End Of Project Report 12

Project overview

I have developed themes that explore movement and stillness in recording the natural world of
sea and land from different perspectives as follows:

  • Light on water - I have developed movie footage of the golden light at Skaill bay to combine
the sound of advancing waves on a calm evening. The sound is uninterrupted by sound of the
wind highlighting the strength of the incoming waves and sound of them receding. I love the
foaming texture of the waves against the reflected sunlight on the sand. This will be shown at
the Mot1 Glimmerings Outdoor Gallery of film and light art 2026.
  • Reflections - continuing my moon on water theme, both still and moving image depicting the
calm of a moonlit Orkney night. Adjustments made to the images in Black and White
  • Reflections - departing from the moon theme, interest had moved to streetlights and
buildings on Stromness Harbour-front- experiments with long exposure ancf camera
movement and black and white adjustments. The shimmering of the water has been retained
    and recognizable.
  • Experimenting on how the reflection images can be viewed differently by identifying areas of
images and scaling to fit tangram shapes. Exhibited at Moti Island Games Windows gallery at
Norfhlight with positive feedf:>ack on the Games Theme. Developed relationship with online
    printer.
  • Edited images in Black and white to present a number of options to an LED lit
Perspex column. This needed accurate resizing of the images by photoshop
to fit the tubes and get printed up to the cylinder size. This accuracy produced
a finish suitable for exhibiting. Submitted two lit columns to the Pier Arts
Center Open Exhibition. Widely liked and commented on by viewers as an
    interesting vehicle for Photographic prints.
  • Light through windows - I prefer this black and white edited version of this
image - needs further progression to find locations with sea views in specific
    light and weather
  • Moving reflections from the sea on windows - the image shown is from a
movie that shows the shimmering of the sea in a door opposite the window. I
found this interesting and will look for further examples.

Development of creative practice

  • Having the right tools to adjust and develop images for a specific
end use or idea has been beneficial to producing exhibition quality
images. It has given possibilities to experimentation.
  • I was active in putting together and submitting an application to
Artichoke's Durham Lumiere 'Brilliant' call out for artists for a light
installation ideas for the 2025 Lumiere. I was unsuccessful as
places for non-local artists were limited but had the confidence
that I would be able to satisfy their brief to present a suite of
edited movies capable of an outdoor installation.

How the award made a difference

  • The award has helped equip me with the editing and reshaping
tools to give me confidence to tackle new ideas in still and moving
    Images.
  • The editing package has brought me up to date with editing
facilities learned as a student and helped me relearn skills.
  • I am looking forward to 2026 in continuing my adobe subscription
to develop my work further particularly in the windows reflections.

Light on Water

Reflections

Streetlights and buildings on Stromness harbour-front - experiments with long exposure and camera movement and
black and white adjustments.

Reflections - Moon on water - Stromness

I found these images of the moon over the Garson urban landscape interesting with the moon extending its reflection across the harbour
as it moved higher in the sky- the moon becoming the dominant reflection. The Black and white execution gave a sharpness to the
sense of time.

Sea Reflections - Experimenting with reflection images set on a playful Tangram format inviting the viewer to break up and
connect different images of the sea and land
