Eligible Two Year Olds

Some 2 year old children are eligible for a funded Early Learning and Childcare place if their parents or carers receive particular benefits, or if the child has been looked after by the authority, the subject of a kinship or guardianship order. If you are in receipt of any of the benefits below, your child can have up to 1140 hours of Early Learning and Childcare starting from the term after their second birthday.

Registration for a two year old place should be completed no earlier than three months prior to the date of their second birthday.

Eligible to start Early Learning and Childcare:

1 March – 31 August. August (Autumn Term).
1 September – 31 December. January (Spring Term).
1 January – 28 February. April (Summer Term).

Your 2 year old can get funded early learning and childcare if you get one of these benefits:

  • Universal credit (monthly earned income less than £850)
  • Income support
  • Income-based Job Seeker's Allowance 
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Incapacity Benefit
  • Severe Disablement Allowance
  • State Pension Credit
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 (Support for Asylum Seekers)

Your 2 year old can get funded early learning and childcare if you or your child has experience of care.

  • Experience of care means being looked after by either:
    • a local council
    • a kinship carer or guardian, like a family member or a close friend
