Young people from Kirkwall Grammar School, Stromness Academy and Sanday were recognised for their achievements at this year's Duke of Edinburgh's Award Ceremony, held at St Magnus Cathedral on the 20th of November.
The ceremony celebrated participants who completed Bronze and Silver awards, reflecting months of commitment to volunteering, developing new skills, maintaining physical activity, and completing challenging outdoor expeditions.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award requires young people to dedicate significant time and effort across four key areas. Participants volunteer in their communities, take up new skills or hobbies, engage in regular physical activity, and complete expeditions that test their navigation, teamwork and resilience.
Councillor Ivan Taylor, Vice-Chair of the Education, Leisure and Housing committee, opened the event, praising the young people for their determination and teamwork.
"The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a real achievement," he said. "These young people have shown resilience, dedication, and a willingness to challenge themselves – qualities that are incredibly important for their futures and for the future of our islands."
The ceremony included reflections from participants on their DofE journeys. School coordinators Owen Grieve, from Stromness Academy, and Rory Robinson and Beth Brooks-Taylor from Kirkwall Grammar School shared presentations and stories from the year.
Beth Brooks-Taylor said: "In a world where so much of life centres on grades, pressure and social media, DofE serves as an important reminder of what really matters: giving time to your community, caring for your body and mind, and making lasting memories with your friends."
Ibolya and Szabolcs from Soma's Light presented a special award in memory of their son, Soma Veres, to Sarah Seatter in recognition of her commitment, positive attitude and unwavering determination.
Congratulations to all of the young people who completed their awards - your dedication and achievements are an inspiration to the whole community.
