Work under way on new spectator stand and dugouts at Kirkwall Grammar School

Work has begun on a new permanent spectator stand and dugouts on the Meadowbank grass pitch at Kirkwall Grammar School.

The project is fully funded by the Scottish Football Association and was proposed by the newly formed Orkney Football Hub, which brings together representatives from Orkney FC, Orkney Amateur Football Association, Orkney Women's Football Club, Orkney Youth Development Group, Orkney Islands Council and the Scottish Football Association.

The stand and dugouts will offer covered, accessible seating for matches and training, along with dedicated storage for clubs using the pitch.

Karl Adamson, Orkney Football Hub said: "We are delighted that groundworks have commenced at Kirkwall Grammar School, marking a significant milestone in our long-held ambition and  it is part of a wider investment into football at KGS

“We are grateful to Orkney Islands Council for its collaboration, and critically, we thank the Scottish Football Association, not only for the funding but also for their continued and invaluable mentoring and support."

Beyond football, the space is designed to support outdoor learning for the school and a wider range of community activities, making it a multi-use addition to the site.

Improving existing football and community facilities through our 'Pitching In' fund is only possible through collaboration, and on this occasion, work undertaken by local volunteers at the Orkney Football Hub, in partnership with OIC, has contributed massively to the realisation of this important project. We welcome this asset to the football landscape, and look forward to continuing to work with local partners to improve the game."

From outdoor lessons for pupils, to space for other sports and community groups, this facility has plenty to offer. It's a fantastic example of what we can achieve when everyone works towards a shared goal, and it'll make a real difference to everyone who uses this facility for years to come.
