Statement on North Ronaldsay cable

We are disappointed to learn that the installation of the new electricity cable between North Ronaldsay and Sanday has been delayed until Spring 2027.

The need for a new connection to North Ronaldsay has been recognised for some time, and local residents have already experienced a prolonged period of uncertainty. We know this latest delay will be frustrating and concerning for householders and businesses on the island who have been waiting for a long-term solution.

However, we welcome SSEN Distribution's commitment to provide support to householders affected by the requests not to generate renewable energy. This was a key request raised by Orkney Islands Council and partner agencies on behalf of the North Ronaldsay community, and we are pleased that residents will receive financial recognition of the disruption they continue to face.

The Orkney Local Emergency Coordination Group will continue to work closely with SSEN, local responders and community representatives to monitor the situation over the coming months. While we all want to see the new cable delivered as soon as possible, our immediate priority is ensuring that arrangements are in place to maintain a resilient electricity supply on the island, including the inevitable adjustments that will be essential for winter coverage.

Should any issues arise, the Emergency Coordination Group stands ready to coordinate support and work with partners to minimise disruption to residents and safeguard community wellbeing.

We will continue to engage with SSEN and seek regular updates on progress towards the delivery of this important infrastructure project.
