Roll out of new 20mph speed limit begins across Orkney

Date: 20 January 2026

Time: 12:30 PM

Orkney Islands Council is to get underway with the phased introduction of the new 20mph speed limit across Orkney.

The first signs are being installed in Burray this week, with the full roll‑out continuing over the coming weeks.

As signage is installed, the new limit becomes legally enforceable. Drivers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the updated limits and take extra care when travelling through affected areas.

A full programme will be published shortly.  In the meantime, a map showing current 20mph roads, as well as those due to be reduced, can be viewed here by unselecting the ‘current 30mph limits box’ on the map’s filter:

This change forms part of the Scottish Government’s national strategy to introduce 20mph limits in built‑up areas across the country. The initiative aims to simplify speed limits for drivers, reduce perceptions of road danger, encourage more people to walk, wheel and cycle, and create more pleasant streets and neighbourhoods by providing a more equitable balance between different road users.”
