Roads Update

A summary of road delays and closures due to road and building/utility works and events for the week starting Monday 31/08/2026.

Road, building and utility works

Ongoing works

A965 Finstown, between Grandon Road and the western 30 mph speed limit at the property of Kimberley, localised reconstruction and resurfacing work starting during week commencing Monday 31 August 2026 for approximately 15 weeks. The works will be carried out under temporary traffic signals which will cause delays to all traffic in the area.

Glaitness Road (Soulisquoy to Muddisdale track) – Works are planned to start on Monday 31 August 2026 to carry out localised reconstruction. Works to be carried out under temporary traffic signals which will cause delays to all traffic in the area and are expected to take around two weeks to complete.

A965 Finstown to Stromness – Openreach works to carry out cabling and cable related work are ongoing, with the works being carried out under temporary traffic signals which will cause delays to all traffic in the area.

Looking ahead

A960 Deerness Road (Easdale Loan to Grassick Court) – Localised reconstruction works are currently planned to start during week commencing Monday 14 September 2026, with the works expected to take around three weeks to complete. The work will be carried out using temporary traffic signals which will cause delays to traffic in the area.

Noup Road (from the B9066 junction to the Oakleigh), Westray – Carriageway resurfacing is planned to start during week commencing Monday 14 September 2026 with the works expected to take around one week to complete. The works will be carried out under road closure conditions, access will be maintained to affected properties and Westray Junior High School at the discretion of staff on site, a diversion route will be in place for affected traffic.

A965/Howe Road junction, Stromness – Junction resurfacing, currently works are planned to start during week commencing Monday 5 October 2026. The works to be carried out under a combination of road closure conditions and temporary traffic signals.

B9042 near Oback Road junction, South Ronaldsay – Localised reconstruction, currently planned to start during week commencing Monday 12 October 2026 with the works to be carried out under road closure conditions.

Pickaquoy Road, Kirkwall – Works are being planned to carry out areas of resurfacing on Pickaquoy Road between Junction Road and Muddisdale Road from Monday 12 October 2026, which will have an impact on all traffic in the area as much of the works will be carried out under road closure conditions.

Church Road/Back Road, St Margaret's Hope – Carriageway resurfacing works are currently planned to start during week commencing Monday 19 October 2026 and are expected to take around three weeks to complete. The works to be carried out under road closure conditions which will affect all traffic in the area.

Crowness Crescent (o/s Orkney Aggregates) – Carriageway resurfacing, works to be carried out under road closure conditions.

Laing Street – Carriageway resurfacing, works to be carried out under road closure conditions.

Mill Street (King Street to Council Office car park access) – Carriageway resurfacing, works to be carried out under road closure conditions.
