The multi-use games area (MUGA) at Kirkwall Grammar School has been given a revamp, just in time for the summer sun - and the Orkney 2025 Island Games of course!
The area, which is situated between Kirkwall Grammar School and the 3G pitch, has been improved through partnership working between Orkney Islands Council’s Sport and Leisure Service, Kirkwall Grammar School and the Scottish Football Association.
Permanent football goals, produced by Orkney Mechanical Services, have been added and posts have also been put in place for attaching a tennis net.
Court markings have been painted for small-sided games of football, tennis and basketball and there is also potential to add basketball hoops later to further develop the area.
Local illustrator Alex Leonard has designed artwork with an Orkney sport theme for kickboards, making the court a bright and appealing place to play.
‘Court rules’ have also been developed and displayed to ensure everyone using the area can do so in a safe and inclusive way.
Elaine Harcus, Sports Development Officer for Orkney Islands Council’s Sport and Leisure Service said: “Playing games outdoors, whether you are young or a little bit older, is such an important part of a healthy, active lifestyle. Our aim was to make the site a much more attractive space to encourage recreational play, as well as developing the area for KGS curriculum activity. With the help of the Scottish Football Association, we’ve been able to achieve that, and I can’t wait to see the area in use.”
Graeme Sutherland, North Regional Manager for the Scottish Football Associations North Regional Manager said, “We are delighted to see the improvements made in this space and this is a great addition to the site at Kirkwall Grammar School. It is important that children and young people have access to good quality facilities and spaces where they can play informally and creatively. The MUGA at Kirkwall Grammar School will certainly provide an opportunity to replicate the street games we all enjoyed when we were young!”
