Planning a charity collection in Orkney?
2 October 2026
Charities and community groups planning a street or door-to-door collection in Orkney should apply for permission through Orkney Islands Council. This includes any events where the public are being asked to make monetary donations, where collectors have sealed containers.
The process is straightforward. The application form covers a few basic details - the organisation, the organiser, the charity being supported, the collection method, the area, and the proposed dates. Once complete and signed, it goes to the Council's Governance team.
Permission helps reassure the public that collectors are legitimate, and it means the Council can help avoid different groups collecting in the same area on the same day. Applying in good time ahead of the planned collection date tends to make the process smoother for everyone.
