Orkney Islands Council has developed a new marine plan designed to sustainably manage the seas around the islands whilst protecting the unique way of life and marine environment for future generations.
The Orkney Islands Regional Marine Plan - which has now been adopted by Scottish Ministers - provides a framework for decisions on marine activities and developments out to 12 nautical miles from the coast.
The plan was developed by the Council with extensive input from local communities, businesses and stakeholders who work on and depend on Orkney's seas.
Orkney Fisheries Association Chief Executive, Alistair Buchan, welcomed the "very strong recognition in the plan of the vital contribution that fishing makes to the economy and culture of Orkney.
“Whilst the industry would expect no less from a marine plan, I believe the Council and its marine planning team have made an exceptional and commendable effort to stress the important role commercial fishing continues to play."
The plan includes policy and guidance on maximising economic benefits for Orkney communities, mitigating the effects of climate change, nature conservation to protect marine wildlife and ecosystems, protecting the water environment and preventing marine litter and waste, and ensuring that development projects, such as aquaculture and renewable energy, deliver community benefits.
The Council worked closely with the Orkney Marine Planning Advisory Group throughout the plan's development. The group consists of stakeholders representing the community, environment and industry, who provided expert advice and guidance to inform the plan-making process.
Professor Sandy Kerr, Director of the International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT), said: “Completing the Orkney Islands Regional Marine Plan is a significant achievement, and is the result of extensive research, dialogue, and consultation.
“The plan will help guide decisions to manage our seas more efficiently and equitably, whilst taking local priorities into consideration.”
The marine environment is vital to Orkney's economy and way of life, supporting industries including fishing, aquaculture, renewable energy and tourism. The new plan ensures these activities can continue sustainably whilst protecting marine habitats and wildlife.
Councillor Kristopher Leask, Chair of the Enterprise and Infrastructure Committee, said: "The adoption of the Orkney Islands Regional Marine Plan marks a major milestone in the sustainable management of Orkney's marine environment and economy. I'm delighted that we now have a plan in place to address local issues and priorities, helping decision makers deliver our objectives for Orkney's seas.
"I'd like to thank everyone who has contributed to preparing the plan, especially our local communities and those who work on the sea. This local knowledge and experience has helped the Council create a plan that will deliver for Orkney.”
The Council will now work with local stakeholders and marine users to implement the plan, ensuring it delivers lasting benefits for Orkney's communities and marine environment.
