Orkney Islands Council pays tribute to Maureen Herdman
12 October 2026
It was with great sadness that we learned of the sudden passing of Maureen Herdman.
Maureen dedicated much of her life to supporting, encouraging and inspiring young people across Orkney. Through more than three decades of youth work and community learning, she helped generations of young people develop confidence, gain new skills and realise their potential. Her influence extended far beyond her professional role, touching countless lives through her compassion, enthusiasm and unwavering belief in young people.
Maureen's commitment to our communities was truly extraordinary. Whether through her work with youth groups, community organisations, volunteering initiatives or charitable causes, she gave her time generously and selflessly. She embodied the very spirit of community service and was rightly recognised at both local and national level, including receiving YouthLink Scotland's Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding contribution to youth work in 2018.
Those who knew Maureen will remember not only her remarkable achievements, but also her warmth, humour, energy, and ability to bring people together. She was deeply respected by colleagues, young people, and community organisations throughout Orkney and was the cornerstone of the CLD family.
We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Maureen's family and friends. Her legacy will live on in the generations of people she supported, encouraged and inspired, and she will be greatly missed.
