Hail and Ride Bus Services

Following a recent influx of queries from the public, Orkney Islands Council is reminding passengers of how the hail & ride system operates across all local bus services.

All bus routes in the county continue to run on a hail & ride basis, meaning that passengers may signal for the bus to stop at any point along the route where it is safe for the driver to pull in.

Bus operators have highlighted some challenges in built up areas, such as Papdale, where parked vehicles and groups of passengers standing in unsuitable locations can make it difficult for drivers to stop safely. It can also be challenging for drivers to pick up or drop off passengers at multiple points within a short distance.

We therefore encourage using the bus shelters or stops where possible, or to wait at a location that provides a safe stopping point for the bus.

A recent query also asked whether buses still stop in 20mph zones. We can confirm that there have been no changes to the hail and ride process. Buses may stop in 20mph areas, provided it is safe to do so.

Drivers cannot stop near junctions or in locations where stopping would obstruct the road.

These measures help ensure the safety of passengers, drivers, and other road users, and support the smooth running of local bus services.
