Free Admission for Public to Attend Screening and Q&A of Acclaimed Suicide Prevention Film

Date: 31 October 2025

Time: 04:00 PM

The Orkney Suicide Prevention Taskforce would like to welcome the public in Orkney to attend one of two screenings of The Low Road at the Pickaquoy Centre on Wednesday 19 November 2025.

After the suicide of her best friend at university, a guilt-ridden and heart-broken young woman hikes Scotland’s West Highland Way to find salvation.  The film tells the story of how she deals with grief and misogyny and highlights the mental health crisis experienced by some young adults.

The screenings are free for the public to attend and is part of ongoing local work to break the stigma around seeking help with suicidal thoughts and to raise awareness of the support services available.

Following the screenings, attendees will be able to take part in a Q&A session with the producer of the film, Sophie Marsh, and suicide prevention campaigner and Canmore Trust chief executive John Gibson.

The first screening takes place at 1pm and the second screening at 7pm – tickets to either screening can be secured through the Pickaquoy Centre website: http://bit.ly/3JjFwlF

Please note the film has a 15 age certification.

James Wylie, the Vice Chair of the Orkney Suicide Prevention Taskforce and Orkney Islands Council Director for Education, Communities and Housing said:

“The Orkney Suicide Prevention Taskforce is pleased to offer this opportunity for members of the public in Orkney to attend one of two screenings of a highly acclaimed Scottish film on suicide prevention.

“There will be a screening of the film on Wednesday 19th November in the afternoon at 1pm and an evening screening at 7pm – both screenings will be immediately followed by a 45-minute Q&A with the film’s producer, Sophie Marsh, and by suicide prevention campaigner John Gibson.

“This follows the successful suicide prevention conference event the Taskforce hosted in September and is part of ongoing Orkney-wide work to break the stigma around seeking mental health support and to promote the support services which are available here in the islands.

“This is an excellent opportunity to see this film which has not been screened in Orkney before and has received national acclaim for promoting the benefits of the outdoors to mental health and raising awareness of suicide prevention. It is free to attend so please consider taking this rare opportunity to see such an important film.”
