Extended opening hours at Stromness Swimming Pool during Pickaquoy Centre pool closure

Date: 6 February 2026

Time: 10:00 AM

Stromness Swimming Pool is extending its opening hours and adding extra sessions to support the community whilst facilities at the Pickaquoy Centre remain closed for essential repairs.

From Monday 9 February, the pool will offer an additional eight hours of swimming time each week, alongside three extra hours of gym access and three extra hours in the health suite. The enhanced timetable includes extended evening opening times, additional weekend sessions, and extra provision during the February school holidays.

Garry Burton, Head of Active Communities, said: "We're committed to supporting our community whilst facilities at the Pickaquoy Centre are closed.

“Usage of the facilities at Stromness swimming pool and fitness centre has seen a significant increase since the closure of the pool at the Pickaquoy Centre, and the team are working hard to add extra capacity across the pool, gym, and health suite so people aren't left without access to swimming and fitness facilities."

Staff are also accommodating school swimming lessons and working with local clubs to fit in their sessions where possible.

The full timetable is available at www.orkney.gov.uk/ssp and on notice boards at Stromness Swimming Pool. Printed copies are also available at reception.

A further timetable from 23 February will be published shortly if required, with staff continuing to look at offering more availability.
