Orkney Islands Council is committed to advancing gender equality in the workplace, and we are proud to be participating in the Equally Safe at Work accreditation programme.
This programme provided a valuable framework to strengthen our organisational culture and deliver meaningful, sustainable improvements.
We have reviewed policies, practices and guidance to ensure they support progression and to prevent and address gender-based violence and domestic abuse. We recognise the strong link between gender inequality and violence against women, and that progress requires addressing the inequalities women experience at work and in the labour market.
We are committed to providing a fair, safe and inclusive workplace where all employees feel supported, valued and able to thrive. We also recognise that employees’ experiences are not the same for everyone.
For example, people who are racially minoritised, disabled, lesbian, gay or bisexual, or trans can face additional barriers and different challenges. Understanding these differences helps us respond more effectively and ensure our approach is inclusive for all.
We will continue to embed this work across the organisation through ongoing review and continuous improvement.
Lorna Richarson, Director for Infrastructure and Organisational Development said that “Participation in the Equally Safe at Work programme is an important step in strengthening our commitment to equality across Orkney Islands Council. Creating a fair and inclusive workplace requires more than policies, it requires cultural change, strong leadership and meaningful action.
We are committed to ensuring that all employees feel supported, valued and safe at work, particularly those affected by gender-based violence. By continually reviewing our practices we aim to remove barriers, support progression and create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
As we move forward, we remain focused on embedding this work across the organisation and building on the progress made. By working collaboratively with our employees and partners, we aim to create a workplace where dignity, respect and opportunity are the standard for all, and to lead by example in fostering a safer, more inclusive future.
