Council Introduces New Electronic Sign for Churchill Barrier Closures

3 November 2026

This week, Orkney Islands Council has positioned a variable message sign on Glimps Holm, at the south end of the second barrier, which will be used to advise when the barrier is closed.

During periods of adverse weather this winter, there may be occasions when the south-side closure point is not staffed. In these circumstances, the electronic sign will display the official road closure notification and should be treated as the official indication that the route is closed.

Drivers are reminded that it is an offence to cross the barriers when they are closed, regardless of whether staff are present. Closures are put in place to protect public safety and reduce the risk to road users during hazardous weather.

We ask all drivers to observe the signage and barrier closures and to plan journeys accordingly during periods of severe weather. The sign will also be used to display other relevant information, including road safety messages.
