All the favourites and much more at Family Fun Day in June

Date: 22 May 2025

Time: 11:00

A variety of free and fun activities for all ages will be on offer at a special Family Fun Day being hosted by the Council’s Community Learning and Development and Employability team in June.

The event on Sunday 15 June will see all the usual favourites such as bouncy castles and giant floor games, alongside some special activities such as an ‘Orkney Corner’ with the Council’s Museums team, set up in the Picky Centre arena.

Bubble Tea will be flowing thanks to the Orkney Youth Forum and the OIC Youth Services team.

Activities for the whole family include all-abilities boccia and Tops Bags with the Active Schools team, and goody bags to take away – not to mention free tea and coffee for the grownups.

Craft tables, dinosaur activities and hunts, and giant floor games with the Community Learning and Development and Employability team, offer the chance for some quality intergenerational time.

Or, step back in time and cozy up in the Orkney Corner with the Museums team surrounded by an Orkney Chair, rag rug, tilly lamp, vintage radio, shawl and baskets . Try your hand at washing a garment the old fashioned way using a washing “dolly” and bucket – a great photo opportunity!

The Museums team will also host a ‘build-your-own cathedral’ activity based on the model of St Magnus Cathedral in The Orkney Museum’s Medieval gallery. Favourites for many years, rune stamping will be on offer for folk to write their name in Norse, as will the chance to create a rubbing from a replica of the Scar Plaque.

Also on hand will be information about upcoming school holiday programmes with the Council’s Sport and Leisure Service’s Active Schools Team.

Kerry Spence is Team Leader for Community Learning, Development and Employability at OIC: “In the lead up to the school holidays we wanted to showcase some of the brilliant, free activities that families and young people can enjoy through the Council.

“We’ll also be there to answer questions folks might have about other support we offer to the wider family such as employability support, support for adults to improve their skills in reading, writing, maths or IT skills, youth groups, Duke of Edinburgh and other youth award schemes which can boost confidence, broaden horizons and open up opportunities to contribute to your community.”

The event takes place from 12 midday to 3pm on Sunday 15 June and all are welcome.
