BACKGROUND
SABSM is aware that this Standard could be applied in a number of ways.
Following a recent STAS approval it was felt a guidance note would assist consistency.
One approach, when considering a space for a future shower, was to require a clear space with activity space and waste connection within the same area as the accessible toilet and that provision of the shower should not mean that non-loadbearing partitions be removed.
Following consideration by Consortia Technical Representatives, it was agreed that the space for provision of a future shower may be located anywhere on the principle living level as long as the space is provided with a suitable waste connection point and also that provision of the future shower may mean removal of a non-loadbearing partition in order to achieve the space and activity space.
DECISION
When assessing a space for future provision of a shower, it may be located anywhere on the principle living level as long as the space is provided with a suitable waste connection point. The space need not be provided with ventilation or water service pipework since these may be practicably provided at the time of alteration. The designated shower space does not need to be enclosed.
