This document contains Orkney Islands Council’s planning guidance for protecting historic buildings, archaeological sites, landscapes and other cultural heritage. It explains the legal protections and consents that may apply, including those for listed buildings, conservation areas, scheduled monuments and the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site. It sets out a five-step process to identify affected heritage assets, assess their importance, consider impacts, reduce harm and weigh any remaining loss against the benefits of development.
