Citizens Advice has launched a comparison tool that looks at every available tariff for your postcode. You can consider if you are overpaying for electricity and switch to a different tariff and/or energy supplier.

Winter Fuel Payment

If you were born on or before 5 October 1954 you could get between £100 and £300 to help you pay your heating bills. This is known as a ‘Winter Fuel Payment.

You usually get a Winter Fuel Payment automatically if you are eligible and you get the State Pension or another social security benefit (not Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Child Benefit or Universal Credit).

The deadline for claiming payments for winter 2020 to 2021 is 31 March 2021.

Cold Weather Payment

The Cold Weather Payment is paid when the outside temperature is zero degrees Celsius or below for seven days in a row; between 1 November and 31 March.

For each 7-day period that the average temperature has dropped to these levels (or is forecast to drop to these levels) you’ll receive £25.

Warm Home Discount

By law, larger energy suppliers are required to help vulnerable customers pay for their energy. Those who are eligible could receive a £140 rebate on their winter electricity bill.

Help with arrears from your Energy Supplier

As well as grants to make your home more energy efficient, some utility companies also offer help if you have large arrears on your bill or even help with payments towards white goods or boiler replacements.
