Employment of Children

Orkney Islands Council should be advised of any children aged under 16 years old who are employed. The Byelaws on the Employment of Children apply to all employment of under 16 year olds, even if the work is unpaid.

It is the employer’s responsibility to apply for a work permit within one week of the child commencing work. Adherence to the byelaws is the responsibility of the employer. Failure to do so can lead to a fine.

Please refer to the Byelaws on the Employment of Children which is available in PDF format from the ‘Related Downloads’ section of this page. The application form to apply for a work permit, along with guidance notes can also be downloaded from this section.
