Deposit return scheme

If you make, import, buy or sell drinks in Scotland you may have legal responsibilities (obligations) under The Deposit and Return Scheme for Scotland Regulations 2020.

The deposit return scheme for glass and plastics is not operated, administered or enforced by the council.  Although the scheme provides a so called “environmental health exemption” the Council’s environmental health team plays no role in granting this exemption. Exemptions from complying with the scheme are granted by Scottish government who have arranged for Zero Waste Scotland to administer the applications for exemption.

SEPA are responsible for enforcing the requirements and compliance with the scheme
