Orkney is on the National Cycle Network Route 1 – Aberdeen to John o’ Groats, Orkney and Shetland.
The route heads across the arable lands of north east Scotland, along the cliff tops on the Moray Coast, through Inverness, and then through some of the most spectacular and remote scenery of northern Scotland, then from John o’ Groats over the Pentland Firth to Orkney and Shetland. Orkney is a great cycling destination, especially if the wind is behind you! Route 1 is 501 miles / 806km in length.
The walking and cycling network has been expanded in recent years, and improvements to, and expansion of, the network will continue, focusing on local access for functional journeys that can be made by foot or cycle, for example to work, to school or to the shops.
