Orkney roads - evening update 13 February
13 February 2021

A large section of the main Kirkwall to Stromness road has been closed due to treacherous conditions.

Police and OIC crews have managed to clear the majority of vehicles stuck in some of the worst hit areas on the main Kirkwall to Stromness road and have made the decision to close the section of road from Hatston to the Brig O’Waithe meantime.

Conditions will be assessed and the road reopened as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.

Chief Inspector Matt Webb, Police Scotland Area Commander for Orkney, said: “I cannot stress enough the importance now of the “stay home” messaging, particularly given that darkness has now fallen, temperatures will plummet and winds are set to continue.

"These conditions are not going to improve, in fact they will worsen overnight. It is vital for everyone’s safety that only essential travel takes place. This is why we have come to the decision to close a section of the main Kirkwall to Stromness road that has been blocked for much of the afternoon despite a huge effort by all.

“Once it is safe to do so, we will reopen. Please heed our warnings not to venture out unless absolutely necessary.”

OIC Roads and Environmental Services Manager, John Wrigley, added: “Our crews have battled tirelessly against the wind and drifting snow to try and keep our priority one roads open, however, this has been hampered by vehicles becoming stuck. I cannot emphasise strongly enough how important it is for folk not to venture out.

“Our crews must be stood down to get some rest overnight so while the road may be reopened, it is highly unlikely that it will remain clear of drifting snow. Anyone attempting passage risks becoming stuck so we ask that you continue to avoid even once reopened to allow for emergency and vital transport only.”
