OIC Marks National Inclusion Week

OIC Marks National Inclusion Week
20 September 2019

Orkney Islands Council is this year taking part in National Inclusion Week.

National Inclusion Week, which this year takes place between the 23 - 29 September, was created by Inclusive Employers and aims to raise awareness of inclusion in the workplace.

This year’s theme is ‘Everyday Inclusion: Celebrate and Inspire’ – encouraging employers to celebrate their work on putting inclusion at the heart of their organisation and inspiring others to do the same, regardless of their size, sector or stage of their inclusion journey.

Activities taking place at the Council include sessions on dementia awareness, supporting a mentally healthy workplace, menopause, trans awareness as well as a number of webinars on inclusion topics.

Gillian Morrison is the Council’s Executive Director of Corporate Services. She said: “We are showing our support for Inclusion Week with a number of events and signposted webinars for staff.  It’s simple really; inclusion comes down to what we say and do. We believe that equality, diversity and inclusion are key to the way Orkney Islands Council works. Often, it’s the small things that can make a real difference to how we feel about work. Feeling included at work is important and has an impact on how we perform in our roles.”

Richard McKenna, Managing Director, Inclusive Employers, said: “It’s fantastic to see that Orkney Islands Council is joining employers up and down the country by taking part in National Inclusion Week 2019. This shows that they take building inclusive workplaces seriously and I welcome their commitment to do so. I’m really excited to see how they use National Inclusion Week as a force for change and celebration and hope others will be inspired to follow their lead, wherever they are in their inclusion journey.”

Last year more than one million employees from over 700 organisations took part in National Inclusion Week through internal events and activities covering a wide range of workplace inclusion topics, as well as webinars and daily challenges from Inclusive Employers.

The week also features a flagship celebration of the organisations participating in the National Inclusion Standard, an accreditation tool from Inclusive Employers which recognises organisations’ commitment to creating more inclusive workplaces.

More information about National Inclusion Week and how to get involved is available via the Inclusive Employers website.
