Cursiter Recycling Centre – misuse could lead to closures

Cursiter Recycling Centre – misuse could lead to closures
15 July 2021

Orkney Islands Council is reminding users of the Cursiter Household Recycling Centre that the facility is only accepting domestic recyclable material.

The site cannot accept waste materials such as vehicle tyres, ‘black bag’ refuse and bulky household waste eg unwanted furniture. Nor does it accept commercial waste, which should be disposed of through appropriate channels.

If these types of materials are found on site, the Council may be required to close it to the public until additional staff and vehicles can be found to clear the offending waste materials. This could potentially be for several days depending on resources available.

Lorna Richardson is Strategic Policy and Projects Manager: “We would plead with the public to please make proper use of the site, depositing only accepted recyclables into the appropriate skips.

We know the site is much appreciated by members of the public – we’d ask all users to please help us keep it open, and wish to thank the majority for their ongoing understanding and cooperation.”

Materials accepted at Cursiter Recycling Centre are:

  • Cans (aluminium and steel).
  • Glass, paper, garden waste.
  • Household batteries.
  • Scrap metal.
  • Vehicle batteries.
  • WEEE (Waste electrical and electronic equipment).
  • Cardboard.
  • Fluorescent tubes (including energy bulbs).
  • Plastic bottles.

Check what is accepted at each of our household waste and recycling centres.
